About trmcswain

Tina R. McSwain is Founder & Director of The Charlotte Area Paranormal Society or CAPS. She also serves as Lead Investigator and Historian of the group, and has amassed over 15 years of experience in research and study of the paranormal. She is a native Charlottean, and has been interested in the paranormal since reading Nancy Roberts' North and South Carolina ghost books of the 1960's/1970's. Early TV shows such as Dark Shadows and Kolchak - The Night Stalker aided to further pique this interest. Since childhood, she has had a profound curiosity about ghosts, hauntings and paranormal events, and throughout her adult life, has continued to learn and gain knowledge in this world around her. Her catalyst for studying the paranormal was her first encounter in 1989 with a full blown apparition of a friend's grandmother. The lady's ghost walked toward Tina, smiled, waved, and then turned around and disappeared. After the initial shock, Tina realized this was a rare occurrence and one she wanted to repeat. Thus, she began to research her experience. Soon after, Tina found and worked with local metaphysical advisors and psychics, and read and studied many volumes on paranormal investigation techniques, equipment used, and the science and theory behind it. After several years of study, she desired to practice what she had learned. She sought out and joined a number of North and South Carolina Paranormal and Ghost Hunting groups over the years. While serving in varying capacities, she gained valuable experience and continued to learn and experiment with and utilize new technology. Wanting a more professional and scientific based research oriented group, Tina formed CAPS with a small group of like-minded colleagues. Since its formation in 2005, CAPS has assisted over 150 private home and business owners, historical sites, and government agencies in both the Carolinas and Tennessee who have had concerns of paranormal activity. When not helping a client, the CAPS team visits reportedly haunted locations, both famous and not-so-famous, in an effort to validate or dismiss these claims. In addition, CAPS serves as mentors to area high school students choosing ghost hunting as the subject of their North Carolina High School Project Graduation requirements. Tina also formed and handles the CAPS Cemetery Clean-up Committee. Believing that CAPS can make a difference in its community at large, Tina chose The Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina as CAPS Official Charity. Tina and her CAPS team members volunteer their time throughout the year in support of the charity's efforts to end hunger. Tina also speaks to groups at various venues and events to educate the public on the vast world of the paranormal. She has appeared on national internet radio shows on the ParaX Network, as well as local radio and television programming, in various print media, and has served as paranormal consultant on a recent TV pilot production. Under Tina's direction and leadership, the Charlotte Area Paranormal Society continues to aid and support our clients; conduct research, investigate, study and gather evidence of, and document encounters with, the unknown.

The Perils of Summer Ghost Hunting

With last week’s high temperatures being well above 90, and throw in the heat index of 104-110, it is quite an undertaking to investigate in the summer time.  Especially if your investigation, or the bulk of it, is to be outdoors.  Or worse, your location is inside, but does not have air conditioning.

The obvious is to drink and have plenty of water on hand.  Don’t forget the bug spray to ward off all our little winged friends.  (Unscented is the way to go so as not to spoil any smells that may be attributed to a paranormal cause.) Beware the dive bombing bats, and then, there are the snakes!

Last but certainly not least, you have the physical strain on the body; profuse sweating, easier exhaustion, and the possibility of cramps, nausea or other heat related issues.

With no end in sight and another week of 90+ temperatures, be mindful of this, and try to hold those investigations in a modern, well insulated and air conditioned home….lol

Mentoring

In North Carolina, high school seniors are required to submit a paper and product as part of their Project Graduation requirements.  Many of them have chosen paranormal investigating as their subject.  I have been mentoring these students since 2008 when I was first approached and asked to help.  As of this writing, over two dozen students have enlisted our expertise and guidance.

Since that time, this endeavor has become a most rewarding adventure for both myself and my CAPS team of paranormal researchers and investigators.  Our students have taught us as much as we have taught them.  It has been a thrill for us to work with such young inquisitive and bright minds.  It has also been a comfort to us to be able to pass along our knowledge and ensure that there are paranormal investigators in the future.  Hopefully, those who follow in well trod footsteps, will carry on our legacy.

And, our students have received only the topmost grades on their final presentations.  If you are a student reading this, contact us, we must be doing something right…

Prospect Place – Trinway, OH

This is one creepy place. The highlight of our trip here was getting locked out of the building by the ghostly inhabitants. Once we went outside to investigate the barn and the cellar (which could only be accessed from outside), I guess the ghosties had had enough of us, and locked us out! The door was very hard to shut in the first place, and the lock was turned to the locked position. Quite the experience.

The Bissman Building & Ohio State Reformatory – Mansfield, OH

After leaving Prospect Place around 10am in the morning, we journeyed to Mansfield just ahead of a thunderstorm. We went through Mount Vernon, OH and had our curiosity piqued by all the 5-pointed stars displayed on the houses. (We later found out this is an Amish tradition for good luck.)

After checking in to the hotel and grabbing a much needed shower, we set out for the Mansfield Fire Museum (reportedly haunted) and took part in an impromptu historical and paranormal tour.

Leaving there, we set out for the Ren Theatre (another reportedly haunted location). We had quite an interesting experience, in of all places, the Men’s Room. Some EMF Meter hits as well as a knock at the door and no living person around to have done the knocking. We conducted an EVP session here as well.

Last but not least, we headed for the Bissman Building, our original Saturday evening destination. This family owned food distribution business has quite the sordid history. From rumors of illicit liquor and mafia influences, to the tragic murder of a young girl, and the vigilante justice handed out to her murderer by the company’s employees. Three of our team members had an uneasy feeling on a certain floor, and two had to leave the area entirely. The rest of us carried on with our tour. This is one location we want to visit again!

Sunday was our day (and night) for the Ohio State Reformatory. Just as we did at Prospect place, we deployed 8 stationery night vision cameras, 2 stationery full spectrum cameras, and several motion detectors strategically placed throughout. Our teams covered this imposing structure from (literally) top to bottom. As you can imagine, we have hours and hours of video and audio to review for any possible evidence captured.

On the road again…

This time to Ohio.  My CAPS team members and I are off to our first haunted destination, Prospect Place in Trinway, OH.  We should arrive for our investigation around 7pm Friday evening.  This family mansion is quite imposing as it sits alone on a hilltop.  A most foreboding and outright creepy place.  It was built in the 1850’s and was used as part of the underground railroad, offering the escaping slaves a safe haven as they made their way to Canada and true freedom.  It is reported to be the ghostly home of the lady of the house, as well as a young girl.  The barn is said to harbor a more sinister presence, a bounty hunter who found himself on the end of a hangman’s noose in a mock trial followed by swift local justice.   We’ll try our best to capture some evidence of the spirit world.  Maybe the essence of a fleeing slave or an injured passenger from a horrible train wreck that occurred nearby.

We’ll then make our way on Saturday to Mansfield, OH and investigate the Bissman Building in downtown Mansfield.  This family owned business has a few ghost stories of its own.  A mysterious ghost girl named “Ruthie”, as well as an unfortunate gentleman who lost his life on his last day of work at the building.  On the day of his retirement, he had forgotten an item and got back on the elevator to return to his office to retreive it.  The elevator malfunctioned and fell, beheading him.

There’s an old theatre just across the street, and we’ve been told we’ll get a shot at it too.  Almost every old theatre you hear of is said to be haunted.  This one is no exception.

Finally, we’ll end our “Ghosts of Ohio” tour at the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield. OH.  For some of us, this will be our second trip to this infamous prison.  I for one, had an encounter in the Assistant Warden’s living quarters.  I heard footsteps coming from the room to my left, then they walked right up to me.  I also saw a series of lights near the ceiling of the room for which I have no explanation.  This is the facility that was used in the filming of The Shawshank Redemption.  Prisons are famous for their paranormal activity.  Hopefully, we have a few new experiences of our own.

Stay tuned for our results…

They come to get you when its time…

I have a friend who is dying.  (The reason you did not see a blog from me last week).  She is currently at a hospice facility.  I spent all day with her on Saturday of last week, and yesterday.  I can tell she doesn’t have long.  She asked me to check out her room.  I asked her what she meant by this statement.  She said, you know, do that thing you do and see if anyone is here with us.  I began a short meditation, and did pick up on a man; rugged, tall and was wearing a hat.  I kept this to myself.

She continued and said, well I am seeing people.  I asked her what people, she said she was seeing her dad.  I knew her dad had passed many years ago, but I had never met him.  I asked what he looked like and did he favor wearing hats.  She said that he did, and that he was a tall, rugged man who had been a farmer all his life.  That confirmed what I had suspected.  Her time is drawing near, and her father is there to help her cross into the afterlife.

What a comforting thought, that you don’t have to make that journey all alone.  Someone who loves you will be there to help, and allieviate any fears you may have.

Godspeed, my friend.  I will miss you

Physician, heal thyself.  How many times have we heard this metaphor?  Why is it that the caretaker often forgets to care for themselves?  In the case of a “Cleanser” such as myself, this can become downright annoying at best, dangerous at worst.

After a recent investigation, I was so busy making sure my team was protected and free of any spirit attachments, that I forgot to take care of myself.  Luckily for me, my Mother acts as a backup.  For you see, she sees dead people, and is quick to point out that I have someone hanging around.  In this particular case, she brought up the subject at dinner.  She said, “I have been meaning to tell you for about two weeks now, you brought something home with you.”  So, I immediately begin to think back, where was I two weeks ago?  What was I doing?  As I begin to check my calendar, I ask her, “what did you see?”  She answers, “well I don’t rightly know, I don’t think its human, and it definitely is not good.”  The phrase “Oh crap” leapt to my lips, but I did not let it free.  I grabbed my phone and went outside to make a call to my support system.  After a few minutes of discussion, I had made a battle plan to rid my home of this entity.

I grabbed my “jump box” as I call it.  It has all my oils, salts and herbs and cleansing supplies.  I began to gather my items in earnest.  I grabbed a bottle of this, a sprig of that, and soon had concocted a mixture sure to remedy the situation.  I than begin to cleanse my home and myself.  I enlisted my Mother to help me.  She is amazed at the ability I have to do this type of thing.

After a rocky start (I was made to feel lightheaded and we both heard a series of growls), I succeeded in riding my home of this unwelcome presence.  My Mother said she watched “something” leave out the front door.

I learned a valuable lesson from a mistake that I will never make again.  In my line of work, one cannot afford to default on their spiritual maintenance.  Live and learn, as they say.  I’m just glad I lived through this one and emerged healthy and better equipped with one more piece of knowledge under my belt.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium – Louisville, KY

Has to be one of the most haunted locations in the country.  Given its long history (around 100 years) there has been plenty of time to make a haunting.  Opened in 1910 as a tuberculosis clinic, it was expanded in 1926 to what is seen today.  It remained a tuberculosis hospital until 1961.

Closed for a year, quarantined, and renovated, it opened back up its doors in 1962 as a geriatric facility called Woodhaven Medical Services.  It remained as such until the state of Kentucky closed it down in 1980.

So much death, dying, deplorable conditions, misery and mistreatment of the elderly, has made this place ripe with ghostly activity.  Add to that, suicide (or was it murder?).  During the time it lay abandoned, rumours of satanic practices within its walls permeated the local folklore.

With its dark past, The Charlotte Area Paranormal Society decided to travel to Louisville and investigate Waverly.  While personal experiences are not considered evidence, they are deemed important, and almost everyone in the group had at least one.  Four team members experienced the sound of rolling coffin carts, and the bang of them stopping at the bottom of the Body Chute (long after they have been removed.)  Another four team members experienced a dark presence on the 4th floor which left them unnerved.   Still others saw “Shadow People”, and experienced the strange phenomenon of a “doppelganger”.  Two team members encountered the ghost of a dog that had met a tragic end at Waverly.

We employed a great deal of technology, (8) Sony Hi8 night-shot cameras on tripods with IR illuminators, (3) roving Night Shot cameras with IR illuminators (these accompanied the teams as they investigated), (2) full spectrum HD video recorders on tripods with IR Illuminators, (2) roving full spectrum digital cameras, (1) roving full spectrum video camera with IR Illuminator, and (1) roving FLIR thermal imaging camera. Of course, team members ran digital audio recorders the entire time, and used
digital cameras as well.

With this much footage and audio to review, it will be some time before we can complete our analysis. We will post anything we find on our website.

On a personal note, I will say that if you ever get a chance to investigate
Waverly, go for it!  But, don’t go alone!  It has been the most active site I have ever seen (and I have been to many across the country). I know I speak for my fellow team members as well when I say that the place, the images and the experience stays with you long after you leave.

Paraskevidekatriaphobia

Paraskevidekatriaphobia, the irrational fear of Friday the 13th. Derived from the Greek for Paraskevi (meaning Friday), dekatreis (meaning thirteen), and phobia (meaning fear).

(The fear of just the number 13 is called triskaidekaphobia.)

The number 13 itself is feared. Many buildings omit the 13th floor, choosing instead to go from floor 12 to floor 14. The Munsters from the old TV series days lived at 1313 Mockingbird Lane, to be sure the producer’s play on the superstition.

Couple that along with the notion that Fridays are generally regarded as unlucky. Take Black Friday for instance, when in 1929 the stock market fell, leading to many an investor’s death from suicide and the collapse of the US economy. And, you have the fear of Friday the 13th.

Many people postpone trips, refuse to make important decisions, or otherwise react negatively to the date.

Even us paranormal investigators. We did an investigation last year on August 13th (a Friday) in hopes that we would have tremendous luck in gathering evidence. It proved to be one of the quieter investigations we have done. So yes, we too succomb to the bad luck of Friday the 13th and now plan our outings for another time.

What about you, did you change your habits this Friday?
